Duminica Vameșului și a Fariseului

Reflectăm astăzi la două pasaje Scripturistice: 2 Timotei 3:10-15 și Luca 18:10-14, care ne oferă perspective profunde asupra naturii credinței și a căii spre mântuire.

În 2 Timotei 3:10-15, Sf. Pavel îi reamintește ucenicului său Timotei importanța de a rămâne credincios învățăturilor pe care le-a primit. Apostolul îi cere lui Timotei să predice Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu cu perseverență, convingere și răbdare, mai ales în fața opoziției și a ispitei de a se conforma dorințelor altora. Acest îndemn servește ca o reamintire atemporală pentru toți: cum răspândim în societate Evanghelia ce ne-a fost încredințată?

În Luca 18:10-14, reflectăm la pilda Vameșului și a Fariseului. Fariseul, plin de mândrie și neprihănire de sine, se laudă cu propriile sale virtuți și privește cu mândrie spre aproapele său. În schimb, vameșul își recunoaște cu umilință starea de păcat și cere mila lui Dumnezeu. Domnul subliniază că vameșul, nu fariseul, este cel care merge acasă îndreptățit înaintea lui Dumnezeu. Pilda ne amintește de importanța umilinței, a nevoii de mila și iertarea lui Dumnezeu, mai mult decât recunoașterea umană.

Meditând la aceste pasaje, putem în primul rând discerne că suntem chemați să rămânem statornici în credință și să proclamăm Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu cu convingere și perseverență, așa cum l-a îndemnat Sf. Pavel pe Timotei. Într-o lume care respinge adesea învățătura Domnului și îmbrățișează minciunile, trebuie să fim neclintiți în angajamentul nostru față de adevărul Evangheliei.

În al doilea rând, pilda Vameșului și a Fariseului ne învață virtutea smereniei. Ni se reamintește că nu propria neprihănire ne justifică în fața lui Dumnezeu, ci recunoașterea stării de păcat și încrederea în mila Lui. Umilința ne permite să ne apropiem de Dumnezeu cu inimile curate, căutând iertarea și harul Lui.

În cele din urmă, aceste pasaje ne amintesc de rolul vital al Bisericii în a ne ghida în călătoria de credință. Biserica continuă sarcina discernământului și a învățăturii, asigurându-ne că rămânem credincioși adevărului Evangheliei.

Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee

We reflect today on words of Scripture found in 2 Timothy 3:10-15 and Luke 18:10-14, passages that offer us profound insights into the nature of our faith and the path to salvation.

In 2 Timothy 3:10-15, the Apostle Paul reminds his disciple Timothy of the importance of remaining faithful to the teachings he has received. Paul charges Timothy to preach the word of God with urgency, conviction, and patience, even in the face of opposition and the temptation to conform to the desires of others. This exhortation serves as a timeless reminder for all of us: how do we spread the Gospel entrusted to us, in our generation?

In Luke 18:10-14, we reflect upon the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. The Pharisee, filled with pride and self-righteousness, boasts of his own virtues and looks down upon his neighbor. In contrast, the tax collector humbly acknowledges his sinfulness and begs for God’s mercy. Jesus teaches us that it is the tax collector, not the Pharisee, who goes home justified before God. The parable reminds us of the importance of humility and the recognition of our need for God’s mercy and forgiveness, more than human recognition.

Drawing from these passages, we can firstly discern that we are called to remain steadfast in our faith and to proclaim the word of God with conviction and urgency, just as Paul instructed Timothy. In a world that often rejects the Lord’s teaching and embraces falsehoods, we must be unwavering in our commitment to the truth of the Gospel.

Secondly, the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector teaches us the virtue of humility. We are reminded that it is not our own righteousness or self-righteousness that justifies us before God, rather our recognition of our sinfulness and our reliance on His mercy. Humility allows us to approach God with contrite hearts, seeking His forgiveness and grace.

Lastly, these passages remind us of the vital role of the Church in guiding us on our journey of faith. The Church continues the task of discernment and teaching, ensuring that we remain faithful to the truth of the Gospel.
